Dear birdJammers...birdJam just completed its best 1st Quarter ever! We very much appreciate all your support, and we hope that you’re looking forward to a great Spring Migration season! We encourage you to familiarize yourself with your birdJam iPod before heading out into the field. If you need any assistance, just send us an email.2009 birdJammer Survey Summary
Would you prefer sweet, smoky or hot sauce?Remember that Playlists are the "secret sauce" to making it fast and easy to find a bird species on your birdJam iPod. Don't make the mistake of scrolling through the Songs category on your iPod which only provides an alphabetic listing of songs. If you've got other music on your iPod, they will be all mixed up together.![]() We advise you to always go to the Playlists Category to quickly find a specific bird. We've created very logical alphabetic, taxonomic, habitat and species playlists so that most birdJammers find a specific bird in 15 seconds or less. Here is a snapshot of some of the playlists from the Eastern region; the Western region has similar groupings only they begin with bJam-W. If you also have music on your iPod, we’ve found that putting music into playlists is a handy way to quickly find any song, whether it is Norah Jones or a Bobolink. In iTunes, just go to "File/New Playlist" to create a new playlist. Then highlight and drag-and-drop the songs you wish to add. Remember that you’re not actually moving the music, just adding new "pointers" so that you can quickly find your heart’s desire. Useful Song Descriptions on your iPod If you’ve purchased birdJam since January 2007, or have upgraded to the latest version (FREE!) via the upgrade section of our web site., are you aware that bird song descriptions and/or where it was recorded are available on your iPod? This illustration shows the song description available for the Clapper Rail on an iPod Touch. To access this information, when a bird song is playing, just tap the center of the photo and this screen will appear. Tap the middle of the screen again and it will disappear. On a Nano or Classic iPod, when a bird song is playing, just click the center of the click wheel three or four times (depends upon your model), and this information will appear. Keep clicking, and it will disappear again. |
Free Software & CDs When Replacing iPodbirdJammers who purchased pre-loaded birdJam iPods in the past are starting to replace their old iPods. Because birdJam Maker and the Stokes CDs were purchased in the past, we will deduct their cost from the purchase of a new pre-loaded iPod. Just select the pre-loaded iPod that you want, and as you’re checking out, let us know that you purchased a pre-loaded iPod previously. If possible, please provide the order number, or at the very least, the name under which the previous order was made. We’ll then deduct the cost of whatever version of birdJam Maker and Stokes CDs that you already own. Thought you’d want to know!Speaker UpdateThe iMainGo2 speaker continues to be delayed, and we still don’t have a date for delivery. We recommend that you purchase directly from target.com if you want delivery of that speaker in the next month or so (and who doesn’t with Spring Migration getting underway?). For more information, click here.![]() Meanwhile, we do have a great new speaker for the new model iPod Nano (September 2008 and later model)! It is a “Swing” Speaker and Case from Cyanics. Your iPod Nano clicks into the clear plastic case and will slip easily into a shirt or pants pocket. For $29.99, it delivers great sound from such a small speaker, and includes a rechargeable battery for up to 8 hours of playback. It can be purchased on our web site either as part of an iPod Nano Bundle or as an Accessory. Help Preserve Bird Migration DataIn case you missed all the recent press hoopla, there is a massive project to preserve millions of historical bird migration observations. The North American Bird Phenology Program houses a unique and largely forgotten collection of six million Migration Observer Cards that contain migration patterns and population status of birds in North America from the WWII back to the later part of the 19th century. The cards now are being processed and placed into a modern database for analysis. They are looking for volunteers to help with the transcription. If you’re interested, go to their web site and click on the “Become A Participant” link in the left-hand column. Warbler Woods Bird Sanctuary, Cibolo, TexasSue Shaezler, one of the owners of the Warbler Woods Bird Sanctuary, placed Order #56 for birdJam back in July 2005 when we were known as birdPod. Wow, has she seen some changes! Warbler Woods is a Gulf Coast Bird Observatory Partner located in Cibolo, Texas. It has a checklist of more than 230 bird species—including 36 warblers, and is open to visitors. One visitor recently completed a professional trail map to guide birders on their visits. As spring moves into your area, let us know how we can assist and support you. Or just get in touch and tell us about your adventures and share your photos!
