HEY THERE BIRDJAMMERS!

Spring migration is getting into full swing here in Atlanta! As you're getting ready to head out, we thought you'd appreciate some updates related to your birdJam iPods.

NEW PLAYLISTS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD:
When you upgrade to the latest version of birdJam Maker (www.birdjam.com/upgrade), there are several new playlists available, and more will be added regularly:

1."Sound Alikes" of both Eastern and Western birds for comparison of birds with similar songs

2. New Festival Playlists

  • New River Birding and Nature Festival,
    April 30 - May 5, 2007
  • Potholes & Prairie Birding Festival, June 7-10, 2007
  • Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, May 17-20, 2007

COMMON WESTERN BIRD PHOTOS NOW AVAILABLE: Just like the Eastern common birds, we worked with some of the best bird photographers in North America, including Robert Royse and Brian Small, to create a very high-quality photo set of 145 common birds of Western North America. They are available for purchase on CD or downloadable from www.birdjam.com.

UNRESPONSIVE IPOD:
If the controls on your iPod are not responding, especially if the battery has been run down very low, you may need to Reset your iPod by doing the following two steps. Also note that if the battery has been low, please plug it in and charge it for at least two hours.

  • 1. Slide the Hold button on the top of the iPod so that orange shows, and then slide it back into the original position so that white is again showing.

  • 2. Now simultaneously hold down the Menu and Center buttons on the front of your iPod for 5 to 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. If you have difficulty, lay your iPod on a flat surface before pressing the Menu and Center buttons.

ENLARGING PHOTOS ON YOUR iPOD:
To enlarge photos to nearly full screen on your iPod (Video or Nano models), when a bird song with a photo is playing, just press the center of the click wheel two or three times and the photo will automatically enlarge. The number of times you need to press depends upon the other information you have saved for each bird.

BIRD ID QUIZ ON YOUR iPOD:
Your iPod comes with a built-in "game" that is ideal for testing your bird song identification skills.

Start at the Main Menu on your iPod, select Extras, then select Games, and finally select Music Quiz.

Five bird names will appear on the screen. You'll have a limited amount of time to choose which name matches the bird song playing. Of course, if you also have other music on your iPod, you might be comparing a Black & White Warbler to the Beatles and Bach!

APPLE ONLINE SUPPORT:
Apple has done a great job of compiling lots of information, manuals, etc. at www.apple.com/support. There is a search box into which you can type key words for quick access to information. Take a look!

iMainGo SPEAKER BATTERY INSTALLATION:
Several problems with iMainGo Speakers have been traced to battery installation. Portable Sound Laboratories has been very responsive in providing instructions so that incorrect battery installation won't void the warranty:

  • 1. The flat side of the battery should always be placed against the spring to hold it in place. Please confirm that all four batteries are installed with the flat side against the spring. Putting batteries in backwards can cause the batteries to overheat and rupture.

  • 2. Never use different brands of batteries together, and never use batteries that are different ages. It's best to always install new batteries out of the same package. If you mix different ages or brands of batteries, they can overheat and rupture.

  • 3. If the sound from the speaker becomes raspy, please install new batteries. This should immediately eliminate the scratchy sound.

birdJam SPRING SURVEY FOLLOW UP:
A phenomenal 30 percent of you completed our recent survey which is currently being compiled. We were very gratified with all your positive inputs, your helpful suggestions, as well as your recommendations for how we can improve. We'll send out the results and the shirts very shortly.

In the meantime, I know you'd rather be out in the field because more than 80 percent of you spend more than 15 days a year in the field, many of you leading trips, conducting bird surveys or photographing birds. Keep in touch, and remember to always use your birdJam iPod responsibly during the upcoming nesting season.

THE BEST VIEW OF THE BIRD!
All of us are so fortunate to reap the benefits of the hard work and long hours put in by the bird photographers in the global birding community, photographers like; Robert Royse, Brian Small, Mike Danzenbaker, and many, many others. This photograph of a tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) was made by Richard Ettlinger. Look for it in our newest ads. Wow!

ADD YOUR PHOTOS TO SPECIFIC BIRD SONGS:
If you have installed the Stokes CDs into iTunes and have run birdJam Maker, then it is easy to associate bird photos with bird songs. With iTunes open, select and play a specific bird song. Notice the "Now Playing" box in the lower left corner of iTunes with the dashed line insert box: "Drag Album Artwork Here." All you need to do is select the desired photo from your Pictures files, the internet or other source, and then drag-and-drop it into the Now Playing box while the bird song is playing. Next time you sync your iPod with iTunes, the new photos will download.

With many thanks and best wishes, Denese, Jay and Charlie
