Sounds of the White-Breasted Nuthatch
Sitta carolinensis
Shortcut: Yank-yank
Song: The male's song is a vibrant series of nasal notes sounding like hey-hey-hey-hey-hey. Song may be heard from midwinter through spring.
Call: The common call is a loud, nasal yank, given either singly, in pairs, or in a rapid series that indicates alarm or excitement. Soft ip or ik notes are used as intimate contact calls by nuthatches as they move around together.
